Metophioceras Ammonite

£595.00

This ammonite was found on Monmouth beach, Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset in 2020, and was painstakingly prepared for over 60 hours in 2021 using only hand tools (no air abrasives) and has been polished so that the colours of the shell are highlighted.

This ammonite comes from the same layer as the famous ammonite pavement and was found rolling around on the beach in the same sized stone that it is currently in. The keel of the ammonite has been largely worn down by the sea, and this is how it was spotted when it was originally found. This ammonite shows that pieces of art can be created from beach-worn stones tumbling around on the beach, and also highlights the importance of collecting fossils on a rapidly eroding coastline!

It is common for these ammonites to be missing centres, and centres are often carved for aesthetic reasons, however I decided to keep this ammonite authentic and only show what was actually preserved in the stone.

This fossil comes from the Blue Lias and is around 200 million years old.

Fossil dimensions: 19cm at widest point

Rock dimensions: 19cm x 16.5cm x 5cm

Location: Monmouth Beach, Lyme Regis
