Cretaceous Lobster Carapace and Tail
This Cretaceous lobster moult fossil was found on the beach at Charmouth on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset in 2021 and comes from the Cretaceous greensand rocks which sit unconformably above the Jurassic rocks at Charmouth. The piece displays parts of the carapace (head and body) and tail, and the carapace is split in half. This is likely because this is the moult of the lobster (where it has shed and regrown its carapace) and so the carapace likely split as it outgrew its old carapace. The fossil was found in a beach-worn boulder and it has been reverse-prepped to reveal the other side of the fossil. Approximately 100 million years old
Fossil size: 70mm x 50mm
Rock dimensions: 120mm x 80mm
