Ichthyosaur Neural Arch
This Ichthyosaur neural arch was found at Lyme Regis in 2023, and likely comes from a medium sized ichthyosaur 1-2m long. Neural arches are rarely found in good condition as they are very fragile, however this specimen was found in a small block of shale, so had remained intact. Ichthyosaurs had roughly 180 of these neural arches in their body. The main function of the neural arch is to protect the spinal cord of the animal. Approximately 195 million years old.
Fossil dimensions: 5.2cm x 2cm
Rock dimensions: 7.5cm x 4.5cm x 1cm
