Crinoid (pentacrinites)
This stone was found on the beach at Charmouth in 2022, and initially showed very few signs of the fossil within. Careful preparation revealed a crinoid head as well as several stems which would have connected the crinoid to a floating piece of driftwood. The crinoids would attach themselves to pieces to driftwood to filter feed, and would go with the ocean currents until eventually the driftwood became too heavy and sank to the seafloor, where they were buried and subsequently fossilised.
Species: Pentacrinites
Rock dimensions: 16.4cm x 10.2cm x 4cm
Location: Charmouth, Dorset
Age: Approximately 196 million years old
