Asteroceras Obtusum Ammonite
This ammonite was found on the beach at Charmouth in 2023 on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset, England. This specimen in particular has a rare colouration with blacks and browns rather than the usual yellow calcite colours. This is due to it being what is known as a “mudfill”, where parts of the ammonite have been replaced with limestone rather than it being fully calcite like most asteroceras ammonites. Because of this, the last mm in centre of the ammonite is not fully preserved and has been replaced by limestone rather than calcite, as the ammonite was located on the outer edge of the stone it was found in. The piece has a cut-base so that it can be displayed without the need of a stand. Roughly 196 million years old.
Species: Asteroceras obtusum
Location: Charmouth, Dorset
Fossil dimensions: 85mm (3.3 inches at widest point)
Rock dimensions: 12x12x3.5cm
